In short: an LED wall is usually the stronger choice in bright rooms, for large or unusual shapes and when the stage is filmed; a projector can be enough in a controllable, darker room with a simple screen and a tighter budget. The deciding factors are ambient light, viewing distance, the space above and in front of the stage, the content and whether cameras are involved.
This guide is for event managers choosing display technology for a conference, forum or launch in Saudi Arabia. It compares the options in practical terms; it does not give prices or technical formulas, which your AV supplier should confirm for your room.
Side by side
| Factor | LED wall | Projection |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient light | Stays visible in bright rooms and daylight | Needs a room where light can be controlled |
| Size and shape | Built from panels, so size and shape are flexible | Limited by the screen, throw distance and projector brightness |
| Space needed | Depth for the structure and access behind or in front for service | Clear throw path from projector to screen, or rear-projection space behind |
| Viewing distance | Closer viewers need a finer pixel pitch | Image is smooth up close; brightness drops as the image grows |
| Cameras and streaming | Generally works well on camera when set up correctly | Can look washed out on camera under stage lighting |
| Setup | Structure, rigging or ground support, power and testing | Projector position, focus and alignment; more for edge-blended screens |
| Power and heat | Higher power need; plan the venue supply | Lower power need |
Questions that decide it
- How bright is the room, and can you control daylight and house lights?
- How far is the nearest row and the furthest row from the screen?
- What is above and behind the stage: ceiling height, rigging points, walls, windows?
- What will be shown: slides, video, live camera, data dashboards?
- Will the session be filmed, streamed or photographed?
- How long do you have for build-up and rehearsal?
- What does the venue allow for rigging, floor loading and power?
If you choose LED
- Ask for the pixel pitch, the wall size in panels and the resolution, and check that content will be prepared at that resolution
- Confirm ground support or rigging, and who approves it with the venue
- Confirm the power supply and who orders it
- Plan a content check on the wall during rehearsal, including speaker slides
If you choose projection
- Confirm projector brightness for the screen size and the room’s light
- Check the throw path is clear of heads, lighting and rigging
- Agree how speakers will see their slides, for example confidence monitors
- Plan a backup: a spare projector or lamp, and a playback backup
Whichever you choose, ask your supplier to list the backup for the display and the playback system in the quote.
